The 1940s and World War II years

The Merthyr and District Camera Club as in was known continue to grow into the early 1940s with their activities constantly being published in the local newspaper, the Merthyr Express

Left: A short newspaper report from the Merthyr Express dated 9th March 1940, which describes the first in a series of demonstrations the club were holding over the coming weeks. This one was a demonstration of chemical developing and printing known as Para-aminophenol Development by club member Mr Brinley Walters. Mr Walters was a local Pharmacist who owner a shop on Pontmorlais in Merthyr Tydfil.

Right: Another report from the Merthyr Express dated 13 April 1940 showing that the club members were always keeping up with the latest new techniques in the world of photography, this time the processing and developing of film ready for use in a projector.

Left: A report from the Merthyr Express dated 27th April 1940 on the last of the series of photographic demonstrations during the month of April. The report reads as follows:-

The last of a series of photographic demonstration was held at Merthyr Camera Club on Monday, Mt F. W. Pullinger presiding. Mr R. F. Freeman, who was the demonstrator, displayed some etching which were made b the ‘Brometch’ method. This is a picture made from the ordinary bromine process with the image etched deeply into the base of the paper with the aid of salt-sulphuric mordent. Mr Freeman, who made several etchings from the members’ own negatives was thanked by Mr T. W. Jones and Mr Frank Williams.

Right: A report from the Merthyr Express dated 11th May 1940, the evening consisted of a programme of lantern slides. This appears to be the last meeting prior to the club second exhibition and the summer break, but this was soon to change with the outbreak of World War II.

Left: A report from the Merthyr Express also dated May 1940 on the proceedings of the 1940 AGM of the club, where a decision was made the postpone the club’s second annual exhibition and that an emergency committee was formed. All club professional activities were also to cease.

Throughout the war the club continue to operate on a much reduce level as the images below shows
